Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are talking a well earned holiday in Cornwall when the local vicar and his lodger, Mortimer Tregennis, appeal for help to solve a mystery concerning Tregennis's siblings. He has visited his two brothers and his sister at their home only to find his sister dead and his brothers driven mad by some horror. Holmes is, as usual, eager to set his mind to the problem.
