If you have ever gazed at names on war memorials and wondered who the people were, you were almost certainly looking at men's names and mostly military. But among the war dead were Merchant Navy seafarers who sailed voyage after voyage, knowing that each one might be their last as so many ships were sunk by enemy action. Amongst those seafarers were a few women and even less has been known about them until former seafarer, Nina Baker, researched this book which brings those women's stories into the light for the first time. Complete lists of all known Merchant Navy women lost in the two world wars are enhanced by full biographies of all the Scottish women who made the final sacrifice. Nearly all have no grave but the sea. This book will be of particular interest to anyone organising a memorial event, whether for Merchant Navy Memorial Day or for Remembrance Day.
