Hazel is a normal teenager: quiet, a bit on the nerdy side. Sure, nobody seems to notice her or even remember who she is, but that's nothing out of the ordinary, is it? Until the day Hazel starts to 'hear' the thoughts of the animals that reside on her mother's hobby farm and she begins to accept that hers is not exactly an ordinary life. Enter the mysterious Cynthia Moses and her band of uncanny (and adorable) orphans who are desperate to solve a mystery that has dire consequences for the children. The only way to protect these innocents is for Hazel to accept that some things can't be entirely explained by her current knowledge of science and reason. Even more difficult, she must accept her own extraordinary nature to survive a world that is both exquisite and brutal in order to save the orphans at Battlefield House.
