Henge has now vanquished his enemy and must await the return of the circus players with his betrothed, Lilia. An encounter at the ferry with a blind beggar crushes his hope of happiness. But Lilia reassures him of her faithfulness - spite, jealousy and vindictiveness have all driven the circus along their road and she now shows resolution and steadfastness to him. Will Henge's misgivings be realised, or will his new friends rally around him in the face of malice.
